Washington can’t quite overtake the Red Wings and stay in second. Plus, the hot teams from earlier this month are plummeting (i.e. Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Boston). And of course, do the Islanders move out of last after beating New Jersey? No, they don’t. Check the rankings anyways.

Detroit still tops the rankings despite a strong bid from Washington, Phily, Montreal, and surprisingly Columbus. Photo courtesy of nhl.com
1. Detroit Red Wings (15-4-2) Week 6 Rank – 1: Despite the charge the Blue Jackets have been putting on the Red Wings hold them off twice the past week, staying tops in the Central and having the best points per game ratio and winning percentage in the NHL. That means they are good enough to stay atop the list for the time being.
2. Washington Capitals (17-6-2) Week 6 Rank – 2: Washington is looking like the beast of the east yet again, but can’t quite overtake Detroit this week again. Want to know why? A 5-0 loss to New Jersey, that’s why. Beating up the Southeast is routine for the Caps otherwise.
3. Montreal Canadians (15-8-1) Week 6 Rank – 4: Les Habs split for the week yet Carey Price goes 2-1 and is getting looks for a possible Vezina candidate. The issue now? The fact the Canadians are barely averaging over two goals a game.
4. Columbus Blue Jackets (14-8-0) Week 6 Rank – 5: A third jersey that tries to look retro by having a circle logo? Been done. And it’s a cannon? Eh, still beats the blue wasp that Columbus originally wore. On the Brightside, the Jackets being chronically overlooked will likely excuse most jersey scrutiny. Another two wins, but Detroit still shows they reign over the Central.

5. Philadelphia Flyers (15-6-4) Week 6 Rank – 6: Maybe someone should explain to the Flyers they need to show up still when subpar teams are scheduled to play them. At least Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky do. Still, two wins and six points is a productive week.
6. Pittsburgh Penguins (15-8-2) Week 6 Rank – 13: This was a week of what the Pens can really do. Well, more like what Sidney Crosby and Marc Andre Fluery can do. Fluery wins three, allows only three goals, and Crosby singlehandedly pushes Pittsburgh’s offense slowly along.
7. Dallas Stars (13-8-1) Week 6 Rank – 10: The Stars may not be scoring consistently outside of Brad Richards, but they keep winning. Kari Lehtonen is definitely part of that, though the more overlooked aspect is that Dallas’ defense is playing solid. Something truly unheard of under Marc Crawford.
8. Los Angeles Kings (13-9-0) Week 6 Rank – 3: The Kings can’t seem to buy a win or any points for that matter nowadays. After going 1-3 last week, they lose another three. Jon Bernier hasn’t lived up to his billing yet as goalie of the future, and the offense is invisible. And just like that the Kings go from first in the west to ninth.
9. New York Rangers (14-10-1) Week 6 Rank – 12: A relatively soft week for the Rangers, as evidenced by the one game not against a sub .500 team resulted in a loss. Still a week of going 3-1-0 means moving up the ladder just about anywhere. Just not in the Atlantic division where New York is still third.
10. St. Louis Blues (12-7-3) Week 6 Rank – 8: St. Louis is still having trouble putting the puck in the net, something Jaroslav Halak has excelled at, and it has been costly. Two losses to Dallas, and averaging a goal and a third over the past week St. Louis desperately needs someone to step up big to reverse their fortunes.
11. Colorado Avalanche (13-9-1) Week 6 Rank – 9: Colorado’s biggest issue seems to be in their own division, whom they have gone 2-4-1 against. This week emulated it as the Avs dropped games to Vancouver and lowly Edmonton.

12. Tampa Bay Lightning (13-8-3) Week 6 Rank – 11: Speaking of divisional issues, the only team Tampa seems to beat in the Southeast is Atlanta. Unfortunately for the Lightning they played against Washington and Florida this week. Tampa splits for the week, and Steven Stamkos is no longer scoring goals on a per game basis which means no general interest Tampa by everyone
13. Boston Bruins (12-8-2) Week 6 Rank – 7: Boston may claim the Southeast division isn’t as easy as most say as they go 1-3-0, and score only two goals in their three losses. More troublesome was that Tuuka Rask and Tim Thomas both looked inconsistent.
14. Vancouver Canucks (12-7-3) Week 6 Rank – 15: Vancouver resembled a Stanley Cup contender again this week, which raises the fact that next week they won’t again. Still 10 goals in two games and only three against is as scary as clapping at Rick Rypien.
15. San Jose Sharks (11-7-4) Week 6 Rank – 16: The Sharks use Antti Niemi and show their investment was in fact worth it by beating Chicago. Niemi then allows six goals in his next start. Hm. And it is starting to look like Dany Heatley won the Joe Thornton sweepstakes and is seeing his goal totals skyrocket.
16. Phoenix Coyotes (11-6-5) Week 6 Rank – 17: Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov shuts out Edmonton, then gets scored on six times. Not surprisingly the Coyotes split the week. More suspect was Dave Tippet giving the Coyotes the day off after their win against Edmonton only to get beat in Anaheim. No getting soft there Mr. Coach-of-the-Year winner, it’s only a holiday.
17. Minnesota Wild (11-9-2) Week 6 Rank – 14: Jose Theodore gets the only win after Nik Backstrom is shelled? Better hold on tight Minnesota. However it looks like Martin Havlat is back to a point a game type player. Unfortunately he only has five goals, which is what the Wild really need.
18. Chicago Blackhawks (13-11-2) Week 6 Rank – 20: Chicago has played better hockey. Yet the Ducks and the Kings have played better hockey also, and the Blackhawks played less badly getting two wins. Still, someone should tell Jonathan Toews to show up. One assist for the week is not creepy commercial worthy Mr. Toews.
19. Atlanta Thrashers (12-9-3) Week 6 Rank – 24: Five wins in a row for Atlanta, with three this past week with Ondrej Pavelec allowing only three goals in those five. And Dustin Byfuglien for the Norris? His numbers look like it. Six points this week for 25 points in 24 games.
20. Ottawa Senators (11-12-1) Week 6 Rank – 22: I am beginning to think Pascal Leclaire has got to be the most frustrated person living. Three games this week allowing a respectable two goals against each game and he only wins one. Brian Elliot starts once against Toronto and gets the shutout. Maddening I tell you.
21. Anaheim Ducks (11-11-3) Week 6 Rank – 21: Not the greatest week for the Ducks’ defense and Jonas Hiller. The Ducks allow four straight games of four goals against and they go 1-3. The Ducks can thank Bobby Ryan for his hat trick in their 6-4 win over Phoenix this week.
22. Florida Panthers (10-12-0) Week 6 Rank – 19: The case of the disappearing offense strikes again. Only three goals in three losses for the Panthers. As seen before, the offense appears for one game and the Panthers win. I think this is more of their offense being terrible rather than just inconsistent. Still only three points behind for eighth place in the Eastern conference. Ridiculous.
23. Carolina Hurricanes (10-10-3) Week 6 Rank – 23: Outside of games against Washington, Carolina had a good weak. They played the Caps twice, falling by a goal in both cases (one via shootout). At least they only have three more games against Washington.
24. Nashville Predators (9-8-5) Week 6 Rank – 18: Nashville’s luck in the shootout has apparently run out, losing both shootouts and falling to 2-2 in them. The larger concern being the offense again, only scoring four goals in four games, with the Preds dropping all four.
25. Calgary Flames (9-12-2) Week 6 Rank – 25: More lack of offense as the Flames only score four in four games also. Yet they won one and snagged an extra point in the shootout loss. Plus Calgary can still hold their record over Edmonton so things still aren’t too terrible in Calgary.
26. Toronto Maple Leafs (8-11-3) Week 6 Rank – 26: Lack of offense and lack of consistency must be at endemic levels. The Leafs get a win over the Stars, scoring four, then only score one more goal in two games. Toronto has now been shut out five times this season already, making goalies everywhere look forward to playing them.
27. Buffalo Sabres (9-13-3) Week 6 Rank – 27: And now we come back to inner division issues for Buffalo. Only one win against Northeastern teams not named after a plant. The Sabres’ one win this week? Against Toronto. One of their two losses? Montreal. Looks like this may stay a habit, just like their lackluster play.
28. New Jersey Devils (8-14-2) Week 6 Rank – 29: By far New Jersey’s best week. Who is responsible? Certainly not the offense. It is the goalie, and it’s not Martin Brodeur. Backup stopper Johann Hedburg gets three wins, allows only a goal against average for the week, shuts out the Capitals, and inspires moose everywhere. The downside for the week? Losing the Battle of the Bottom, getting shutout by the Islanders.
29. Edmonton Oilers (6-12-4) Week 6 Rank – 28: Is Martin Gerber the savoir for the Edmonton Oilers, winning a game, only allowing two goals, and assisting on the game winning goal? Guess not, as Devan Dubnyk got the next start and Gerber has only played that one game.
30. New York Islanders (5-12-5) Week 6 Rank – 30: The Islanders got points, including a win, which makes this the best week the Islanders have had since mid October. Rick DiPietro also played in both, which makes it back to back games and he didn’t get hurt. He also shut out the New Jersey Devils to show that the Islanders are not ready yet to be sent to the AHL. Still, a long way to go to get out of the bottom.
