My Players to Watch

Posted by Zayd Sharif On December - 27 - 2011

Every season I have a few NBA players that I feel some excitement for.  They may or may not be an All-Star caliber player but something about them makes them stand out.  However they may just stand out to my strange preferences.

Some examples of this would be Gerald Wallace and Kevin Durant two seasons ago.  (Actually that year I fell in love with the Thunder in September 2009 by using them on 2K10).  Last season I loved the development Westbrook showed other than the selfishness he tended to show at inopportune moments.

This season there is a team I think is being overlooked and that team is the Portland Trailblazers.  You may say they are going to suffer losing Brandon Roy.  I won’t argue about how talented he is but the fact that he was in and out of the line up prevented the team from truly building a season long rhythm and having some consistency.  I think this hurt them even though he made great contributions and I was very sad to hear he was retiring.

Felton will push the Blazers. Image courtesy of BlazersEdge.com

Now we all know LaMarcus Aldrigde is a talented young player and the Blazers are built around him but I think that the key to their success is Raymond Felton.  Ever since he was on the Bobcats I always felt Felton was a talent but he kept moving from team to team.  He showed some ability in Denver but ultimately ended up in Portland.  I have high expectations for Felton (one of the reasons I drafted him on two of three fantasy basketball teams).  Once he gets his rhythm and feel for this team I really think he can help them push them past where they have been before.

Will Danny Granger Grow with West on his side? Image courtesy of indystar.com

The second player I think should be watched is Danny Granger on the Pacers.  He really never had true help or someone else the defense had to worry about since being drafted.  Now David West is a Pacer and he is someone who can drop 40 on you on any given night with his inside ability and mid-ranged shooting.  This will open the game up for Granger who is a very underrated talent.  The Pacers are by no means a championship caliber team but with Granger having more space and help with West on the roster I see him having a great season.

Andrew Bynum can dominate...if he stays healthy. Image courtesy of lakershoopgang.com

Ok this next player comes with the biggest asterisk there is.  I liked him when I watched him play in the summer league games his rookie season and I feel like he can still improve but I really think this is Andrew Bynum’s year to shine.  Barring a trade or a very likely injury, Bynum is the best offensive center in the league.  Yes that is because Kareem mentored him for so many years but Bynum has the physical tools to make it work.  He has great hands and good footwork.  His mental toughness is questionable but I really think that IF he gets through a season he can put up 20/10/3 and change games on both sides of the ball.  He is now the third option and can fight for the second option behind Kobe.  This kid is good.  He’s had some bad breaks.  Just not as bad as Greg Oden.

The fourth player I think deserves mention is Brandon Bass.  I am sure the Celtics are impressed by his play the first few games and he is a definite upgrade over Glen Davis in physical ability, effort and talent.  If Kevin Garnett shows this guy some of the ropes he could begin a solid career.  He will get more opportunity without Green this season and just needs to take advantage of it as he has the shot and the determination to have an good season that can help the aging Celtics.

NHL Power Rankings: Week 13

nhl3 300x190 NHL Power Rankings: Week 13

The Seguin-Marchand-Bergeron line has been arguably the top line in the entire league so far this year. Photo courtesy of nhl.com

1 – Boston Bruins (23-9-1) Last week: 2

The massive tear the Bruins have been on continues. Both Tuuka Rask and Tim Thomas have save percentages hovering around a gaudy 95%. And hanging eight goals on a division leading team doesn’t hurt either.

2 – New York Rangers (22-8-4) Last week: 5

The Rangers climb to the top of the east in points, though to be fair they got there with two wins over the Islanders. What was impressive however was the 4-2 win over the Flyers.

3 – Chicago Blackhawks (23-9-4) Last week: 3

Two easy opponents in Montreal and Columbus results in four points for the Hawks, but in their big game against the Penguins they failed to show up until the third.

4 – Philadelphia Flyers (21-9-4) Last week: 4

More injuries for the Flyers to fight through with the loss of Sean Courturier now. It doesn’t get easier either with two more road games (for a total of ten through December) until the Classic.

5 – Vancouver Canucks (22-12-2) Last week: 6

The Canucks finally claim the Northwest back from the floundering Wild. Alex Edler is making a case for Norris consideration, though it’s of the Mike Green variety, what with the lack of defense.

6 – St. Louis Blues (21-10-4) Last week: 7

The Hitchcock effect is still strong with the Blues, and it’s even helping disappointment of the year contender Jaroslav Halak, who has begun to finally start playing like a NHL goalie again.

7 – Detroit Red Wings (22-12-1) Last week: 1

The Wings are only 3-4 in their own division, and they get a real test with two contests against the Blues and one against the Blackhawks (finally).

8 – Pittsburgh Penguins (20-11-4) Last week: 8

Pittsburgh’s defense is getting a real test of their depth with no Paul Martin or Kris Letang. Interestingly enough, though not surprising, their goal against have improved during this span.

9 – San Jose Sharks (19-11-3) Last week: 10

So the Sharks are 5-2 against the Kings, Coyotes, and Stars, yet are somehow 0-3 against the Ducks who are in dead last of the Pacific. Jonas Hiller appears to have their number.

10 – Dallas Stars (20-14-1) Last week: 11

Dallas’s up and down defense trended downward this past week allowing twelve goals in three contests, and as a result the Stars go 1-2. A very fortunate offensive explosion against the Predators.

11 – Toronto Maple Leafs (18-13-4) Last week: 15

Fan balloting should be stopped just due to Leaf fans. There is no way James Reimer should be on an All-Star roster. Sorry.

12 – Minnesota Wild (20-12-5) Last week: 9

The Wild’s season seems like a relationship: New things, a great run up, things couldn’t be better, it gets more familiar, then boring, and now things flat out suck.

13 – Florida Panthers (18-11-7) Last week: 12

Looks like the Panthers may be going the same way as the Wild with three straight losses where they were outscored 14-4. Lucky for them, they at least got a Bettman point.

14 – Washington Capitals (17-15-2) Last week: 16

I am actually moving the Capitals up preemptively as I think they may be turning things around. It does all hinge on the Caps playing an entire game and not taking periods off however.

15 – Nashville Predators (18-14-4) Last week: 13

Looks like they are trying something new in Nashville. 30 goals combined in four games this past week. So much for a team with little offense and plenty of defense.

16 – Buffalo Sabres (17-15-3) Last week: 14

The lack of defense in Buffalo is certainly starting to affect Ryan Miller, who also appears to have lost his 2010 magic. It’s been almost has bad as the desertion by the offense.

17 – Phoenix Coyotes (18-15-3) Last week: 17

Very bad news for the Coyotes as goalie Mike Smith goes down with an injury. Jason Labarbera is a decent backup, but in no circumstances should be starting regularly.

18 – Los Angeles Kings (17-14-5) Last week: 19

2-0-1 under Darryl Sutter. A godsend? Well, Sutter’s hiring happened to coincide with Mike Richard’s return, Dustin Brown’s scoring onslaught, and the reappearance of Drew Doughty. So, no.

19 – Calgary Flames (17-15-4) Last week: 21

It wouldn’t be a real season unless the Flames did just enough to hang around on the playoff bubble. Every time they get hot they lose a bunch, then somehow get consecutive wins just to heat back up.

20 – Winnipeg Jets (16-14-5) Last week: 20

I really hope the Jets are happy with what they did, causing the whole realignment deal. Because I actually am. They’re also only two points out of a playoff spot, though that’s rather Atlanta of them.

21 – Ottawa Senators (17-14-5) Last week: 24

If you thought Leaf fans were bad for the All-Star game, Senator fans are on their way to replicating the travesty that happened with Montreal when they had the game.

22 – Colorado Avalanche (19-17-1) Last week: 25

Winners of five straight now (all at home), though the Avs did that back in October (all on the road) right before tanking. The shootout has been their saving grace.

23 – New Jersey Devils (19-15-1) Last week: 18

Speaking of the shootout being a team’s best friend, the Devils are 8-1 in that skills contest. Outside of that though, they are only 11-15.

24 – Edmonton Oilers (15-17-3) Last week: 22

The Oilers did break their four game skid with a win over the hapless Wild. Must have been hungover celebrating the win however as they got slammed for three goals in the first by the Canucks in their next game, losing 5-3.

25 – Tampa Bay Lightning (14-17-3) Last week: 23

The Lightning can’t put pucks in the net, can’t keep the puck out of their own net, and only Steven Stamkos appears to be playing worth a damn.

26 – Montreal Canadians (13-16-7) Last week: 26

Four straight losses, capped off with a 4-0 shutout against the Jets. And somehow the fans think it is because the coach doesn’t speak French.

27 – Carolina Hurricanes (12-19-6) Last week: 28

You know I think Eric Staal is only playing like garbage because I have him on my fantasy team.

28 – Anaheim Ducks (10-19-6) Last week: 29

No matter how bad the Ducks are, they seem to always be able to beat the Sharks and at least put up a good fight against the Kings.

29 – New York Islanders (11-17-6) Last week: 27

In their last nine games the Islanders have only won twice, and both of those had to be done through the shootout. The Islanders do lead the league in most goalies used though. Inexplicably they go back to using Evgeni Nabokov.

30 – Columbus Blue Jackets (9-22-4) Last week: 30

The Blue Jackets are 3-3 in the shootout, which, given their record outside of the shootout at 6-23, should be all the reason why the shootout needs to be killed as an effective tiebreaking procedure.

nuggets e1324749617877 NBA Preview: Northwest Division

Nene and Lawson will not have much help this season. Image courtesy of Dallasnews.com

Team: Denver Nuggets
2010/11 Record: 50-32 – 5th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS:Last year brought the most drama to Denver since the Kobe trial with Melo’s demand to be traded to New York. The Nuggets managed to still stay competitive with the ongoing saga of Melo, and actually got better after the Melo trade.ZS:Ty Lawson and Raymond Felton were an unlikely duo that really made this team go.  After how poorly Melo played to force that trade this team had a sigh of relief and with no expectations played loose and better than expected.Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This team also needs a go-to scorer. The current situation will not cut it for a full season in the loaded Western Conference. They lost both J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler to China, but were at least able to resign Nene.

ZS: A player to make them a contender.  They kept Nene but he won’t be enough to get this team on top.  They need that consistent 25 points a night from someone.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: Things are not looking too good for the Nuggets. The Nuggets have a lot of moves to make, and I don’t see them making it to the playoffs this year. At this point, their roster relies heavily on Nene, Ty Lawson, and Danilo Galinari. The West is just too competitive, and leaves no room for the Nuggets.

ZS: So those three Nuggets in China…stuck there until that season ends.  Not a playoff team but they will give teams headaches on a few nights because of their youth.

Team: Minnesota Timberwolves

wolves e1324749677443 NBA Preview: Northwest Division

The Wolves are hoping to build...right? Image courtesy of mattsminnesotasportsblog

2010/11 Record: 17-65 – 15th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: KAHHHHHHHHN!!!!

ZS: Maybe they read the standings backwards and upside down because this team seemed to want to lose.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The team needs some coordination between the Adelman and Kahn, because at this point they don’t have that. Michael Beasley needs to grow up a little bit too, and hopefully Adelman can provide that. They finally brought in Rubio from overseas and brought in JJ Barea to back him up, two moves I really like.

ZS: Love is good but I don’t see enough leadership on this team.  Get some veterans who can make impacts.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: I’m hyped to see Ricky Rubio. I don’t think he’s going to live up, but he’ll bring some excitement to Minny. I also have high hopes for rookie Derrick Williams, as he is my pick for rookie of the year. I think the Wolves have a surprisingly good roster on paper, and can surprise some people this year. They are of course on of my teams to watch this year . I think the Wolves finish in the top 10 in the West, a big up from dead last.

ZS: I just hope they were told how the standings and records should be read.  Although I have heard Rubio looks good but he won’t carry them into the playoffs.

thunder e1324749955815 NBA Preview: Northwest Division

Can Westbrook and Durant bring home the title? Image courtesy of cbssports

Team: Oklahoma City Thunder

2010/11 Record: 55-27 – 4th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: This team continues to exceed expectations as it continues its climb to be a powerhouse.  They lost to a veteran savvy Mavs team but they are on their way to become a solid team.  Adding Perkins really helped them in the middle and if healthy this team can beat anyone on any given night.

AS: This team proved that they are here for real and shouldn’t be tagged as “the future” any longer. Everything went right for the Thunder last year, and they have a lot to look forward with this young nucleus.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: They could use some more size.  They have the athletes but lack true size.  The bench could use some more depth as well but this team is solid as it is.

AS: Westbrook needs to realize he plays second fiddle to KD. It came up time and time again in the playoffs. He’s a young guy, and he just needs to realize he has the most talented offensive player in the league on his team. They also need Kendrick Perkins to play like the Celtics’ Kendrick Perkins, he was an absolute dud last year in the playoffs and got man-handled by Z-bo.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Another Final contender for me.  Durant and Westbrook are turning into a dynamic duo with Harden, Ibaka, Perkins, and Thabo backing them up.  I question Perkins being the second most paid player but the whole team is still contracted for $55 million.  The whole team.  Now go back and laugh at the Knicks.

AS: I think the Thunder have to take the “finals or bust” mentality this year. Adding Kendrick Perkins on paper was great, but to me he showed very little impact on the court. Dirk Nowitzki exposed every single weakness he had. I see a breakout year for James Harden.  I’m picking the Thunder to win it all this year.

Team: Portland Trailblazers

blazers e1324750077617 NBA Preview: Northwest Division

Can LA Elevate the Blazers without Roy? Image Courtesy of The Columbian

2010/11 Record: 48-34 – 6th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS:This team can never seem to get out of that young and on the verge category.  Always a tough team to play with so many athletic pieces but they just can’t seem to become a powerhouse.  They almost beat the eventual Champs but they just seem to be lacking some good veteran leadership.AS:The team was once again plagued by injuries to Brandon Roy and Greg Oden, and ongoing theme in Portland. They were able to make a nice move last year to bring in Gerald Wallace, and LaMarcus Aldridge showed to the league that he is an all-star.Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: Looking at their roster I feel that this team is being seriously overlooked to win.  It is a deep team with a mix of athletic youth and veterans.  Problem is the injuries.  They need to stay healthy and just cut those injury prone players loose its not worth paying for them.  Example: Greg Oden.

AS: Like Zayd said, this is a good young roster, but losing Brandon Roy to early retirement really hurts. Even when he came back last year in the playoffs, it was pure magic. It is hard to replace a natural scorer like that.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: It is unfortunate that Roy’s career went as it did as he is a very good player.  And while Felton is no Roy, he will be a great player for them as he is starting to find his stride as a PG and I think has a long term future in this city.  Gerald Wallace can finally mesh with the team and now they added Jamal Crawford.  I would not sleep on this team, as they might just have the talent and the lack of hype to surprise everyone.

AS: I like the addition of Raymond Felton and Jamal Crawford. That is a legitimate backcourt paired with Wallace and Aldridge in the frontcourt. This team could really make some noise if they all click, and you know the Rose Garden will be rocking like it’s the JailBlazers all over again.

Team: Utah Jazz

jazz e1324750158723 NBA Preview: Northwest Division

How are the Jazz going to fair? Image Courtesy of the Unofficial Review

2010/11 Record: 39-43 – 11th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS:Usually one of the least drama filled teams in the NBA, then they lost their long time coach in Jerry Sloan after a major rift was opened up between him and Deron Williams.  Then they shipped out Williams himself after losing Boozer the summer before.  But they did get Al Jefferson and Devin Harris.AS:Last year was the year they blew up the Jazz. Losing legendary coach Jerry Sloan and start point gaurd Deron Williams hurts a lot.Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: Harris, Jefferson and Millsap make a decent core but they need plenty of help.  They need more consistent shooting and consistent hardworking role players who can lock things down defensively and make some open shots.

AS: They have a young, blue-collar nucleus with Harris, Jefferson and Millsap. They need a few more pieces like an athletic swingman to really bring it all together.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: I would not be surprised if this team comes together after the chaos of last year and makes the playoffs.  All they need to do is find their identity and fill out that roster with players who can contribute.

AS: Like Zayd said, they need an identity. With that roster, running the classic Stockton-Malone pick and roll might be a great place to start. I still think this  team is one or two seasons away from the playoffs, but they have taken a good step towards rebuilding.

Well NBA starts tomorrow ladies and gentlemen…lets hope for a season that is even better than last years.

NBA Teams to Watch

kevinlove NBA Teams to Watch

Kevin Love, photo courtesy of usatoday.com

LOS ANGELES, CA — Every year in the NBA, there are always a few surprise teams that come out of nowhere and surprise everyone. For the casual NBA fan, they never realize it until you see them in the first round of the playoffs. This offseason has been crazy to say the least; it’s like the ticking time bomb in Speed that blows up if you slow down.  The big moves this offseason have been the Lob City Clippers signing Chris Paul and the New York Knicks signing Tyson Chandler. Everyone else seems to be on Dwight watch (Otis Smith, I would not want to be you right now). With that said, there have been a few teams that have slowly started putting those edge pieces of the puzzle together and now they can actually kind of see the puzzle looking like what the cover does.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers were that team last year where you were left saying, “How the hell did the Pacers make it? The East must be really bad…” The fact was, the East was pretty bad, but the Pacers were not. They gave the No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls all they could handle in that first round, and really exposed the Bulls and their glaring weakness of offense outside of D-Rose. They were just held back Coach Jim O’Brien who was there for the first 44 games and finished his tenure with 17-27 record. I’m still wondering how that guy was there since 2007 (common Larry Legend, you knew he had to go a long time back).  After that, interim coach Frank Vogel took over and the Pacers just started to click. A major reason for the success was because Vogel realized how talented Tyler Hansbrough was. O’Brien never figured out that Psycho T would out work every single player on the floor, a skill that is just not that easy to find nowadays in the NBA. Every good team has to have that guy who really doesn’t give a f*** about anything that will chase after every ball and stand up for every teammate in scuffles, and Psycho T was that guy for the Pacers. Hansbrough made Carlos Boozer look softer than Shawn Bradley in that first round. The Pacers this offseason made a great move by signing David West and stealing him from the Celtics (a move that could really hurt the Celtics if they match up with the Pacers in the playoffs). This lineup is a young one that can really out work you, especially in a short condensed season.  Darren Collison is a promising young guard with lightening speed. They have their star in Danny Granger and plenty of complimentary swingmen in Paul George, George Hill, and Dahntay Jones. Down low they have Roy Hibbert, David West, and Psycho T. Roy Hibbert is one of the most underrated big men in the league. If it wasn’t for Blake “I’ll dunk anything you throw in a 10 foot radius around the rim” Griffin, I think Hibbert could have made a real case for Rookie of the Year. The big fella put up 13 points, 8 boards, and 2 blocks per night last year! I can only imagine those numbers will boost some more under a full season with Vogel as coach, especially the rebounds (I love this guy for fantasy basketball). I will take that front court over any front court in the East. I like the Pacers to contend for the 5th spot in the East.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies for years have been that team that you always looked over on the schedule, but slowly Jerry West and crew built up that roster to what it is today. The most lob-sided trade of this generation – Pau Gasol and Shannon Brown for Kwame Brown, Aaron McKie, Javaris Crittenton, and the rights to Marc Gasol – ended up working out really well for the Grizz. The trade obviously landed them Marc Gasol, a key to their playoff success last year, and it also cleared up the cap space for them to go out and sign Zach Randolph. They cleaned house for a reason, and they were able to put together the pieces to build a young and exciting team in Memphis. This team is has the right attitude and hunger (if you go to  the Memphis Grizzlies homepage you will be greeted by Zach Randolph in a pose that is ready to pounce on you and eat you alive with the phrase ‘Time to Grind’ in the background. I absolutely love it). What this team did last year to the Spurs and almost to the Thunder was no fluke, and I don’t expect any sophomore year slump from them.  The roster is so young and talented. Mike Conley is an underrated guard running the show out there and he is determined to give a big “EFF YOU!” to everyone who thought he was overpaid (this one guy named Kobe Bryant had something to say about the contract). OJ Mayo has had his struggles, but I think can really break out (yes I still believe the hype). Rudy Gay is an all-out stud, and to think they did what they did last year in the playoffs without him is astonishing. THEY DIDN’T HAVE THEIR BEST PLAYER IN THE PLAYOFFS AND NEARLY MADE IT TO THE WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS. The Grizz did themselves a huge favor and resigned the big Gasol to team up with Zach Randolph to be the most dangerous F-C combo in the Western Conference (until Andrew Bynum doesn’t play a full season without getting hurt, I can’t give this to the Lakers as much as it kills me not to). I also love Tony Allen and Sam Young off the bench. Sam Young could be a poor man’s James Harden for this team; he can come off the bench and hit the long ball in bunches. I’m going to put the Grizzlies in the 4th spot in the West, with a first round match up with the Lob City Clippers (yes, I am going to call them the Lob City Clippers for the rest of the season, maybe longer…)

Minnesota Timberwolves

Yes, the Timberwolves finished 17-65 last year, which put them as the worst team in the NBA. Yes, they have the worst General Manager in the NBA (link). Yes, they are in one of the smallest markets in the NBA. With that said, I think the Timberwolves are ready to make a real splash this season, granted the fact that Kahn doesn’t Kevin Love for 3 draft picks (all being guards of course). The only way the Wolves can go is up from here. Kevin Love obviously had a breakout year last year, winning comeback player of the year with his ridiculous 15 rebound average per game (the guy was an absolute fantasy gold mine last year, never lost in rebounds the entire season). They are bringing in just the right coach for this team in Rick Adelman. As a Lakers fan, I love Kurt Rambis, but that situation was not good for him as a first year coach. Adelman is a much more seasoned guy and he has done positive things for every team he has coached. The guy simply gets it, he has that “it” factor, and if we are talking simple Xs and Os, I think he is one of the best coaches in the NBA. Adelman will be the perfect coach for Michael Beasly; a guy who has a ton of talent but just doesn’t have all the screws fitted tight in the dome. Rookie coaches Spoelstra and Rambis had no idea how to handle the guy, but Adelman has dealt with head cases like this before (Ron Artest era in Houston), and I think he’ll be able to guide him down the right path. They also have to very promising rookies in Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams (my pick for ROY). Rubio has been well documented as a poor shooter, but I think he has the skill set to be successful in a league full of speedy guards (a lot of which aren’t great shooters i.e. Rondo, Rose, Collison). The also brought in (and overpaid might I add) JJ Barea to be backcourt mates with Rubio. Adelman is also a big fan of big men who can shoot the ball from range (Vlade Divac, Brad Miller who happens to be on the Wolves, and Yao Ming), and will also have that in Darko Milicic. I really see the Wolves competing this year and predict a finish no lower than 10th in the Western Conference, which is a big upgrade from dead last.

NBA Preview: Central Division

Derrick Rose Pictures 300x300 NBA Preview: Central Division

MVP D-Rose, photo courtesy of picturessports.com

Team: Chicago Bulls
2010/11 Record: 62-20 – 1st in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: The Bulls really came out of nowhere to get 60 wins.  A talented team that added some nice pieces a year ago but they played above their real talent level.  They did have the MVP but Rose needed help in the playoffs and it didn’t come.  Great defense but made baskets win you games too.

AS: The Bulls came out of the gates firing. D-Rose proved he’s a force to be reckoned with in this league, and one of the most elite PGs in the league. Making it to the Eastern Conference Finals was definitely a good season for the Bulls.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: D-Rose needs that sidekick.  Someone who can relieve him and I believe that is a big man.  Boozer did not cut it.  I think they need a scoring big man who doesn’t have a hideous shot…or beard.

AS: I agree with Zayd completely. This team is one big move away from blowing up. I am surprised the Bulls haven’t been in the talks for big Dwight so far. They could also use some help from Carlos Loozer.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Probably won’t win the conference again but will be at least the 2 seed.  They could easily make the Finals if they add that big man.

AS: I think this team will suffer from somewhat of a sophomore slump. They will make noise in the playoffs though, and will be a tougher out for Miami than last year.

No. 1 pick Kyrie Irving, photo courtesy of hawkfantasysports.wordpress.com

Team: Cleveland Cavaliers
2010/11 Record: 19-63 – 15th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: The aftermath of LeBron leaving was in full effect.  It really dismantled this team and it was unfortunate to see.  They did beat the Lakers though.  Not sure why they traded there one bright spot in Hickson.

AS: See Cleveland sports history.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: What don’t they need?  Maybe a new owner who doesn’t have a personal vendetta and makes ridiculous claims about who will win a title first, them or the Heat.

AS: This team needs just about anything and everything. Can you name more than 5 guys on this roster? This team also needs rookie Kyrie Irving to be a superstar, there is a ton of pressure on him.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Bleak

AS: To think that Gilbert refused to trade JJ Hickson for Amare last summer (a trade that probably would have kept Lebron in town); the outlook doesn’t look good. Oh, and JJ Hickson isn’t there anymore, he was traded for Omri Caspi. OMRI FREAKING CASPI. I’m done.

Team: Detroit Pistons
2010/11 Record: 30-52 – 11th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Pistons had a rebuilding year that was in the making for about 3 years. Tracy McGrady actually played well for the Pistons last year.

ZS: The Pistons have some good players but overall this team just doesn’t have a direction and it was clear they were not playoff contenders.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This team needs to develop an identity again. As of right now, they’re a struggling franchise in a struggling town. They need to go back to that blue-collar play they had when they won the chip.

ZS: Exactly what Avi said, they need to regain that Detroit Piston mentality that was so successful for them.  Problem is those players are lacking in this NBA. They have too many good players that play the same position.  Spread out that talent.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: Things aren’t looking great in D-town. I think they float right around 11th in the East again this year.

ZS: Bottom of the Eastern Conference again.  Not going anywhere for a while.  If the CBA made it tough for stars to leave then what happens to a team with no star to begin with?

granger 300x270 NBA Preview: Central Division

Danny Granger, photo courtesy of alwaysmillertime.com

Team: Indiana Pacers
2010/11 Record: 37-45 – 8th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Pacers had a great run back in the playoffs first time since 2006. They even fired Jim O’Brien after a disappointing start, and the team took a full 180 since. Psycho T was unleashed!

ZS: There is always a team that slips into the Eastern Playoffs that just gets lucky but really isn’t going anywhere.  I love Granger but he’s not showing he could take this team anywhere.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Pacers need to continue to their growth from last season. Psycho T proved that he can ball with the bigs down there despite his size. The Pacers made a great move bringing in David West and stealing him from the Celtics.

ZS: Well with David West they just need to get the rest of the pieces that fit around Granger and him.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: The Pacers compete for the 6th spot in the playoffs. They jump the Sixers and the Magic. This team has a lot of potential with a great front court with Hibbert, Hansbrough, and West. I think Hibbert is very underrated and will have a breakout season.

ZS: If this team plays well defensively and can get their offense in line quickly they could get as high as 5th.  Something about this team just feels underrated and lockout seasons have some strange things that can happen.

bucks 300x178 NBA Preview: Central Division

B-Jennings, photo courtesy of puri-travel.com

Team: Milwaukee Bucks
2010/11 Record: 35-47 – 9th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: After the Fear the Deer campaign in the 2010 playoffs, the Bucks had a bit of a setback, most notably because of the freak arm injury to Andrew Bogut. This ultimately caused the Bucks to miss the playoffs.

ZS: A team I like but just gets rocked by injuries time after time.  Barely missed the playoffs but are not good enough to win titles.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Bucks could use a better power forward. Luc Mbah a Mounte just doesn’t have the size down low. The team needs Bogut to bounce back from his freak injury and lead them back into the playoffs.

ZS: They have Jennings and SteJax with Bogut down low and are an ok team but without help down low things will not go well for them.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: If healthy, the Bucks could make a real push for the 8th spot into the playoffs again.

ZS: A  low seeded playoff team but they won’t get far.

Welcome back to the Pardon My Bias NBA Preview with Avi Shah and Zayd Sharif.  If you missed the first few days check them out! Day 1 – Atlantic Division | Day 2 – Pacific Division | Day 3 – Southeast Division

We start with the NBA Defending Champions…

mavericks championship e1324528680833 NBA Preview: Southwest Division

NBA Champs Dallas Mavericks. Image from Getty Images

Team: Dallas Mavericks
2010/11 Record: 57-25 – 3rd in Western Conference and NBA Champs
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Mavs made an amazing run in the playoffs when they were underdogs to both the Lakers and the Heat. Dirk Nowitzki solidified his legacy, and Mark Cuban finally put a ring where his mouth is.

ZS: There wasn’t a hotter team out there by the end of the season.  The team was focused and was absolutely confident it could win the title.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This offseason has been turbulent for the Mavs. They lost Chandler to Knicks, Butler to the Clippers, Barrea to the Bulls, and Peja retired. Meanwhile they got Odom for basically free (along with Khloe) and picked up a washed out Vince Carter. The team really needs to address the absence of Chandler, who was a key contributor and weak side defender in their championship run.

ZS: They need to replace what Tyson gave them.  What helped make them good was that Dirk didn’t need to play defense down low where he can be over powered.  Losing Barea hurts too as they are much older at the PG position now.  They need to find another big  man who will defend the rim.  Good thing the Lakers just handed one to them…for nothing.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: I don’t see the Mavs repeating. The short season is going to hurt the Mavs because its less time they’re going to have with the pieces that they HAVE  to bring in. The more I think about it, the more Tyson Chandler meant to this team last year, and I don’t think they can repeat without him.

ZS: Last season was the perfect storm for them with the talent and the momentum but I don’t see it happening again.  They will seed well but ultimately lose in the playoffs.

rockets e1324528773134 NBA Preview: Southwest Division

Luis Scola is one of their few bright spots. Image from Zimbio.com

Team: Houston Rockets

2010/11 Record: 43-39 – 9th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Rockets had a disappointing season last year. They cut ties with Trevor Ariza, who never bloomed into the star they thought he could. They missed the playoffs and then let Rick Adelman go. They also finally moved on from the Yao Ming era.

ZS: Underrated team but they now need to regroup after losing their big 2002 draft pick.  Yao was a good player but that body wasn’t meant for that much activity.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Rockets need to get Kevin Martin some help. Martin has had the opportunity to be a star, but just has not been able to fill the shoes. They tried making the trade to bring in Gasol, only to be shout down by basketball reasons, and they missed out on Nene too. This offseason had big hopes for the Rockets but they’re now left scratching their heads.

ZS: Martin is a good player but without a real center presence, Scola can only do so much.  (Can you tell I’m partial to centers and forwards for success yet?) They need to begin planning for the future.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: Kevin McHale is the new coach in Houston, but I have never liked Kevin McHale in any kind of coaching/management position. Some ex-player just don’t make good executives/coaches – he’s one of them. Another team that has the right to be very bitter with the NBA.

ZS: They should be watching plenty of NCAA games trying to find their next piece.  Rebuilding mode for sure.

grizzlies e1324528847511 NBA Preview: Southwest Division

Memphis Grizzlies Young Stars. Image from Zimbio.com

Team: Memphis Grizzlies
2010/11 Record: 46-36 – 8th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Grizzlies made a great run into the playoffs being an 8th seed. Knocking out the Spurs was a big deal, and this team proved it’s legitimacy. They went on to the second round and gave the Thunder all they wanted. Zebo got it done.

ZS: Quite frankly, discussing the Grizzlies with Avi is what initiated my desire to write this article.  One of the deepest teams in the NBA.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Grizz need OJ Mayo to be more consistent and Connely to live up to that that huge contract. This team has a solid core that can really surprise some people this year.

ZS: Maturity and just continue to grow but they need to find a way to replace Battier.  They kept the core intact but they have a ways to go before they can win the West.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: The Grizzlies may have one of the most positive outlooks this season of any team. The potential with this young and athletic team is endless. The Grizz could make some big noise in the Midwest, and I think they can win the division. They are the most underrated team in the NBA to me, don’t be surprised if to find them in the top 4 in the West when the season is all said and done.

ZS: This team has tons of momentum and is becoming a true contender in the West.  They will battle the Mavs for the division lead and could have home court in the playoffs.  I like their direction and I like their future but I am not quite sure they will make it over the hump just yet.

hornets e1324528908862 NBA Preview: Southwest Division

Trevor Ariza and the Hornets need some ownership. Image from Zimbio.com

Team: New Orleans Hornets
2010/11 Record: 46-36 – 7th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: I really feel bad for this team.  The hornets are promising team with some very good pieces but they lost their owner and are now run by the NBA.  But that really makes it tough to give this team a direction and that is why the impending departure of Chris Paul was on their minds last year.  They gave the Lakers all they could handle and probably helped expose the weaknesses the Mavs later exploited in the sweep.

AS: The Hornets had a fantastic year with a team with one superstar and one good player (CP3 and David West). Even though they were taken over by the NBA, they made it into the playoffs. Chris Paul can make anyone look good.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: A hug might help.  But this team can’t really expect to win when it has no real ownership.  The team needs an owner and that may only happen if they decrease the value of the team for a reasonable asking price.  Focus on that because trying to win a championship is futile at the moment.

AS: This team needs an owner that’s not the rest of the NBA owners. It is unfair to the fans of New Orleans because the current “ownership” is more interested in putting together a team that’s easy to sell than a team that’s competitive.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: It really is unfortunate for Hornets fans to have to deal with all the drama and now a weakened team.  But I think the trade they made was a good one.  They have two 7-footers, one who is offensively minded and one defensively, a good wing in Ariza and two good gaurds in Gordon and Jack.  They won’t make the playoffs but they aren’t push overs either.

AS: The outlook for this team is horrible until they are bought by an owner that cares. Anyone who saw the pictures from the press conference saw how excited Aminu, Kaman, and Gordon were to be there. I think they have to build around Gordon, as he becomes your new franchise player.

Team: San Antonio Spurs

spurs e1324529008650 NBA Preview: Southwest Division

The Spurs long time Big 3. Image from Zigabid.com

2010/11 Record: 61-21 – 1st in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: The Spurs are back! So that lasted for 82 games until the Grizzlies just muscled and out-youthed them to death.  It was so surprising to seem them go at the top record like that but they wanted home court I guess.  Too bad it wore them out for the playoffs and had no chance to win that match up.

AS: The Spurs had a great regular season, securing up the home court, but were exposed by the Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs. Like Zayd said, they were worn out by the time they got to the playoffs. Last time there was a shortened season, the Spurs won it all.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: Tim Duncan’s replacement. ASAP. And some young pieces.  One of the best 2nd round drafting teams I can remember, but for this season they need to make some moves to compete with the Grizzlies, Mavs, Lakers, Clippers and Thunder.

AS: The Spurs need to begin the transition from the post-Duncan and post-Popovich era (I think the two guys retire together). They made a great run, but can’t compete with the top of the West anymore. Their recruiting is better than any in the league, so don’t be surprised when they get a new star out of nowhere.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: With Pop at the helm and Parker and Ginobili on that team they are always going to be a solid team that will make the playoffs.  Without TD putting up those 20/10 nights and shutting down the lane they aren’t going to win another championship.  Out of respect for TD they will play out his career but it will cost them any chance at winning. But TD is someone who will take a pay cut for his team so if they have some money to add talent the Spurs could be in the Title picture.

AS: Don’t have anything to add because Zayd hit it right on the bullseye.

NBA Preview: Southeast Division

Posted by Avi Shah On December - 20 - 2011

LOS ANGELES, CA — It’s day 3 of our NBA Divisional Preview. Zayd and I look at the Southeast Division. Make sure you check out the all the other posts for Day 1: Atlantic Division and Day 2: Pacific Division

hawks 235x300 NBA Preview: Southeast Division

Josh Smith, photo courtesy of speculativesports.com

Team: Atlanta Hawks

2010/11 Record: 44-38 – 5th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: Atlanta was eliminated from the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Chicago Bulls in what seems to be the repetitive theme for this team regardless of the coach.  Easily one of the most athletic teams in the league but they lack a true inside presence and just can’t get anywhere in the playoffs.

AS: The Hawks had a surprisingly good run into the playoffs last year as they beat the Magic in the first round. This team has been in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference since 2007, but have failed to make any real noise in the playoffs. A lot of people forget in the whole hoopla of Lebron and Bosh coming to Miami, it was actually Joe Johnson who was the real winner of the summer. He took home the biggest contract with the least expectations.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The team made a really nice transition from Mike Bibby to Jeff Teague last year, and Teague was a stud in the playoffs. I am interested to see the development of Teague this year, and if this team can build on their second round showing from last year. Financially with the new CBA, this team may  regret giving Joe Johnson what they did. I think the Hawks are dedicated to the core groups of guys they have, but losing Jamal Crawford really hurts, he was a guy who could come off the bench and put in 15 per game and was an integral part to their offense the last two years.

ZS: They have some young talented players like Teague, Horford, Smith, and Johnson and will be a tough team night in night out as long as they show the effort but they lack a true inside presence that can solidify their defense.  Smith is a strong defender but he would be much more effective as a weak-side and come-from-behind shot blocker.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: I think the Hawks could challenge the Magic and Pacers for the 4th seed in Eastern Conference, but I like both teams better and drawing the 6th spot could lead to a first round elimination. A lot of the Hawks fortunes lie on the shoulders of Jeff Teague.

ZS: I don’t see why anything will change for them since money will be tight for them after that contract Joe Johnson has.  I expect a 5th or 6th place finish and losing in the first round after 6 games.

bobcats 300x237 NBA Preview: Southeast Division

MJ, photo courtesy of eurweb.com

Team: Charlotte Bobcats
2010/11 Record: 34-48 – 10th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The highlight for the Bobcats was that Michael Jordon became a partial owner of the team. Unfortunately, he became a cheap skate and traded away the best player on the team in Gerald Wallace. Jordan left this roster with nothing to build around.

ZS: This team had a future, then Wallace, Okafor and Felton were gone.  So was that future.  It just seemed like they restarted mid plan and are looking for a new path to go.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Bobcats need a go-to scorer. Their roster has a bunch of guys that are role players like Tyrus Thomas, Joel Pryzbilla, Borris Diaw, and Corey Maggette. This team may very well need a new owner, because Jordon was at the front of complaining owners during thel ockout but refuses to put a competitive squad on the floor. Good luck making any money.

ZS: Exactly what Avi said.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it seems like the main goal of management is to remain profitable rather than competitive. I don’t see the Bobcats making the playoffs this year again. Hitting .500 should be their goal, which may actuallly make the playoffs in the East.

ZS: A team really going nowhere in my opinion, and when a partial owner was responsible for the Kwame Brown debacle I don’t see a bright future ahead for them.  Bottom of the Eastern Conference again.

Heat 300x168 NBA Preview: Southeast Division

"The Big 3," photo courtesy of theurbandaily.com

Team: Miami Heat
2010/11 Record: 58-24 – 2nd in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Heat actually lived up to expectations and made it to the Finals. They got the bus rolling at the right time of the season, and handled the Celtics in the playoffs. Unfortunately a bunch of washed out guys who are just riding coattails for a ring as role players didn’t work.

ZS: Having LBJ and Wade on the same team never hurts.  They were solid defensively which really helped them and did not have as much drama as I expected.  They could have won the title but met the Mavs at the wrong time.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: They need some real role players. A bunch of them who did much of nothing (Bibby, Dampier, Juwan Howard, James Jones, and Magloire) are all unrestricted free agents. All I can say is I don’t understand why they signed Eddy Curry.

ZS: They need a center to let Bosh float around and a decent playbook capable point guard who can relieve Wade and LeBron from the ball handling and court control.  But adding Battier is really underrated.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: At this point with current rosters, as much as it hurts to say, the Heat will be back in the Finals.

ZS: There really is no team in the East (with their current rosters) that can take this team in a series.  They will probably win the East and make it to the Finals.

magic dwight 300x180 NBA Preview: Southeast Division

Dwight Howard, photo courtesy of forbes.com

Team: Orlando Magic
2010/11 Record: 52-30 – 4th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: Dwight Howard! That’s about all you can get excited about on this team.  They have overpaid so many players its sad.  They just clearly did not have enough to win last season.

AS: The only bright spot on this team is Superman in the middle. Aside from that, everything went wrong for the Magic. The trade for Gilbert Arenas was horrible. They let go of one overpaid washed out star, Vince Carter, and picked up another one in Arenas. I wonder if Arenas is still spending $2k a week to feed his pet sharks..

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: Well its looking like Dwight is gone so make sure you either get quality young talent now or plenty of draft pick from lottery bound teams.  They should either make the moves to make Dwight happy or begin a rebuilding plan.

AS: Similar to the Hornets, the Magic need to get something in return for the inevitable trade of Dwight Howard. There is nothing Otis Smith can do to keep him in Orlando any longer.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: I think if there is one team they don’t want to send Dwight to its the Lakers and repeat the Shaq event.  But with Bynum as the likely trade piece from LA its looking like a viable destination.  Dwight is ahead of Bynum overall but Andrew is a better offensive player.  Thing is they have no one to surround either but luckily in the East they are a playoff team.

AS: The Magic were able to shed Arenas’s contract via amnesty. Now they just have to get rid of Turkoglu’s contract and get something in return and rebuild. Otis Smith has to be on the hot seat. Fans don’t worry though, they have the coolest arena in the leauge where you can easily be entertained for 3 hours without even watching a second of the game!

Wizards 300x144 NBA Preview: Southeast Division

John Wall, photo courtesy of canishoopus.com

Team: Washington Wizards
2010/11 Record: 23-59 – 13th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: There is a lot of talent on this roster.  And they got rid of Gilbert Albatross Arenas.  Problem is they have Rashard Lewis’ contract using up over 50% of what they are paying.
AS: The Wizards have a very talented stud in John Wall, but the surrounding pieces were certainly lacking. Rashard Lewis, arguably the most overpaid player of the last decade, did the same thing he had been doing in Seattle and Orlando – nothing.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: Surround Wall with players who can make good cuts and open shots.  I like Wall and I think he is going to have a good career but he will need the players and pieces to make it work.  Wall can be a superstar but he is going to need support.  But this team is rebuilding quietly and intelligently.

AS: The team needed to amnesty Rashard Lewis and his $20+ million he is set to make this season, but they failed to do that. They have a good core with Wall and McGee, but they need to surround those guys with some more talented players. Nick Young could be 3 different players on any given night.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Still do not see this team making the playoffs although they might rank higher than expect.  I would say 2 more years before this team can get into the playoffs.  But if they keep this up they could have a Thunder or Grizzlies-like uprising.

AS: I agree with Zayd that this team is still a few years away from making some real noise. Like I mentioned, they have a nice core with Wall and McGee, but Nick Young still has to prove he is a viable and consistent third option.

NHL Power Rankings: Week 12

Posted by Ryan Dunn On December - 20 - 2011
nhl2 300x253 NHL Power Rankings: Week 12

Detroit has enough firepower to outmuscle most anyone, while the Penguins struggle with injuries. Photo courtesy of NHL.com

1 – Detroit Red Wings (21-10-1) Last week: 1

The Red Wings at home have been diabolical to face lately, going 10-0 and outscoring opponents 51 to 15 since November 5th.

2 – Boston Bruins (22-9-1) Last week: 8

The Bruins are the rare team that have the proper amount of points to actual winning percentage if you remove the shootout (aka, second). Also, a 6-0 win in Philadelphia is just down right impressive.

3 – Chicago Blackhawks (21-8-4) Last week: 2

Another week, another shootout win. While going 3-0 is impressive, including knocking off the Wild, Chicago is feasting on shootouts a ton primarily.

4 – Philadelphia Flyers (20-8-4) Last week: 4

Rough patch for the Flyers first getting pounded 6-0 by Boston and then a shootout loss to Colorado. And if you somehow missed it, Chris Pronger is done for the season. So who wears the C?

5 – New York Rangers (18-8-4) Last week: 7

The Rangers’ offense seems to be slumping again, as it is prone to, but the 4-3 win over Phoenix shows that Richards and Gaborik are capable of carrying the team.

6 – Vancouver Canucks (20-11-2) Last week: 6

Two stunning losses to Columbus (via the shootout) and Carolina squanders a chance for the Canucks to fly up the standings, but a 4-0 beat down over the Wild reestablishes who runs the Northwest division.

7 – St. Louis Blues (19-9-4) Last week: 9

Excluding the shootout, the Blues have the third best winning percentage in the league. If Ken Hitchcock doesn’t win the Jack Adams’ at this rate there is something seriously wrong.

8 – Pittsburgh Penguins (18-11-4) Last week: 3

A beating by the Wings, and Crosby and Letang still missing time does not bode well for the Penguins. A big help would be their defense tightening up, as they have allowed 13 goals in their last three contests.

9 – Minnesota Wild (20-9-5) Last week: 5

No longer looking like the surprise league leaders with four straight losses, Minnesota does catch a break by at least getting to the shootout.

10 – San Jose Sharks (17-10-3) Last week: 11

Points in all of their last four games. Though if it wasn’t for the Bettman point, and the shootout in general, the Sharks would be far lower in the standings.

11 – Dallas Stars (19-12-1) Last week: 13

Not a bad east coast swing for the Stars though their two wins were both one goal games. Still, that’s a big improvement for a team that has struggled in that department so far this season.

12 – Florida Panthers (18-9-6) Last week: 14

A week of nothing but shootouts and overtime. There’s a sure fire way to move up in the standings according to the Bettman system.

13 – Nashville Predators (17-11-4) Last week: 15

An up week for the Predators as they go 3-0, and winners of five straight. Very impressive that their win percentage outside of the shootout is comparable to the Penguins and Sharks.

14 – Buffalo Sabres (16-13-3) Last week: 12

The Sabres’ struggles continue, but at least they beat the Leafs. A lot of pucks getting past both Ryan Miller and Jonas Enroth, but that may be more due to the lack of defense in front of them.

15 – Toronto Maple Leafs (16-13-4) Last week: 10

One win in their last six games, and James Reimer is saying he needs to play better. 14 goals against in his four losses and I’d say I’d have to agree.

16 – Washington Capitals (16-14-1) Last week: 16

The Caps just can’t seem to get on track and are now hovering precariously close to .500. Things could improve if the feared Caps’ offense started scoring again, as they scored only one goal per game this past week.

17 – Phoenix Coyotes (16-13-3) Last week: 18

Over at Puck Daddy at “Yahoo!” they ran a piece that Coyotes GM, Don Maloney, was the best in the game. I know the Coyotes are a bargain team, but I still don’t think being .500 earns that title.

18 – New Jersey Devils (18-13-1) Last week: 21

Talk about a good week as the Devils go a perfect 4-0 (and only one win via the shootout). The big names for Jersey also exploding for offense shows what Lamoriello had envisioned last season.

19 – Los Angeles Kings (15-14-4) Last week: 19

At least they beat Columbus and Toronto, though just barely. On the flip side, they were pounded by Boston and Detroit. And the Darryl Sutter reign starts this week. Oh boy…

20 – Winnipeg Jets (15-13-4) Last week: 22

Slowly but surely the Jets are crawling into contention for a playoff spot. Largely because the rest of their division has been so damn disappointing.

21 – Calgary Flames (14-15-4) Last week: 20

The Flames followed up their week full of wins with a week full of losses, three of which came by one goal. Calgary would have fallen further, but two wins over their archrivals in Edmonton keeps them ahead.

22 – Edmonton Oilers (14-16-3) Last week: 17

The monster run by Edmonton seems like ancient history. 2-6 through December so far, and the Oilers are falling back to where many expected them to be. Kids don’t look quite ready enough.

23 – Tampa Bay Lightning (14-16-2) Last week: 23

First week in a while where the Bolts won more games than they lost. Still allowing far more goals than they should be.

24 – Ottawa Senators (15-14-4) Last week: 25

Jason Spezza has had a complete 180 this season compared to last year’s debacle. Unfortunately for Ottawa their goaltending has continued to be garbage ever since the team’s inaugural season.

25 – Colorado Avalanche (16-17-1) Last week: 24

If it wasn’t for the shootout the Avs would 10-17-1. So they would only be 26th in the league instead of 23rd.

26 – Montreal Canadians (13-14-7) Last week: 26

Montreal beats the Islanders and keep themselves from joining the cellar dwellers for the time being. At least three goals allowed each game this past week also, and until the Habs fix that they continue to be stalled in 26th.

27 – New York Islanders (10-14-6) Last week: 27

The team’s healthy, so there isn’t any real excuses besides the fact that they aren’t that good.

28 – Carolina Hurricanes (10-18-6) Last week: 28

A couple of Bettman points and a stunner over the Canucks at least gives the Canes points to tie them for the title of worst in the east.

29 – Anaheim Ducks (9-19-5) Last week: 30

Not surprisingly, the only game where the Ducks don’t give up at least four goals, they win. The Kurtis Foster trade was also a pretty good call, so they move out of the cellar.

30 – Columbus Blue Jackets (9-20-4) Last week: 29

…Which means a return to the bottom for the Blue Jackets. It seems like the only way they win at all is if they go to the shootout. Remove that and the Jackets are 6-21. Yikes.

NBA Preview: Pacific Division

Posted by Zayd Sharif On December - 19 - 2011

And our NBA Preview with Avi and Zayd continues with the Pacific Division!  Don’t forget to catch up on the Atlantic Division!

warriors NBA Preview: Pacific Division
Team: Golden State Warriors
2010/11 Record: 36-46 – 12th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Warriors made a lot of good moves to set them up well for this coming season. Bringing in David Lee was a big acquisition, although he was hurt for a big chunk of the season. In the end, I think 12th was disappointing finish, but injuries may be the reason for this.

ZS: The summer of 2010 I kept saying Lee would be the perfect fit for them.  Then he actually got moved there but didn’t make the expected impact.  The Warriors just prove that a team with too many guards and not enough bigs doesn’t get you anywhere.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This team needs a quality big man because Andres Biedrens is not cutting it anymore. Unfortunately they were not able to bring in Tyson Chandler and Deandre Jordan. They are now stuck with a 1-year, $7 million deal with Kwame Brown. KWAME BROWN???

ZS: This team seems reluctant to pick a path and go for it.  Monta and Stephen are both good talents but they need to choose between them and get on with that direction.  Kwame Brown is a terrible pick up for that team that just can’t seem to get it right with big men.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: With a poor showing in the short free agency season, I think the Warriors took a couple steps back. They really needed to address their deficiency in the post, and they simply were unable to do so. In order for this team to take the next step, they have to get a big guy. No playoffs for the Warriors.

ZS: One of the most fun teams in the NBA but that’s about it since that amazing 2007 playoff upset. I don’t see them making the playoffs this season.

121511 NBA Los Angeles Clippers Chris Paul PI 20111215215048295 660 320 NBA Preview: Pacific Division

Team: Los Angeles Clippers
2010/11 Record: 32-50 – 13th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Clippers had the rookie of the year and finally a legitimate all star in Blake Griffin. Griffin proved that he could be the franchise player, as long as the Clippers would be able to put some guys around him and change the culture.

ZS: Did the Clippers put trampolines under the hard wood? They got some high fly acts over there.  Finally the Clippers look like they are going in the right direction.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Clippers needed to bring in another star to surround Blake Griffin with some talent, and they made a real splash this offseason. Bringing in Caron Bulter, Chris Paul, and Chauncey Billups were all great moves for the Clips, and they resigned Deandre Jordan.

ZS: Good luck in not getting injured because this team is a now a loaded roster after the Chris Paul trade.   They really revamped this team…Lakers need to watch out.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: The Clippers finally have the roster to shed the negative connotation with the Clippers historically. This is a young team with a ton of potential, and could make some real noise in the playoffs. The have finally put together a team that can compete wit the cross-town Lakers, and it has brought the excitement to LA.

ZS: This is a playoff team and could earn home court advantage for a round.  But they are no laughing matter anymore this is a team for everyone to watch out for.  The Clippers, Grizzlies and the Thunder look to be the West’s future.

lakers NBA Preview: Pacific DivisionTeam: Los Angeles Lakers

2010/11 Record: 57-25 – 2nd in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Lakers sleepwalked through the season, and it came and bit them in the ass in the playoffs. Pau Gasol essentialy disappeared, and the results are clear. The Lakers simply lost the championship hunger.

ZS: Boredom or fatigue?  That’s up to you.  I say boredom.  Yes they played a lot of games the last three years but to go out the way they did was disgraceful and an embarassment for the greatest coach of all time.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: They need to get younger and more athletic in general, but most notably at the point guard position. They also need to get the hunger back, but I don’t think that will be much of an issue with Kobe Jellybean Bryant leading the charge.

ZS: Derek Fisher, you have done some great things for this team.  The next thing you could do is wear and suit and move over a few seats so the Lakers can get some young GOOD point guards.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: The Mike Brown era begins in LA. I am interested to see how he caters the offense for the big men. This WILL be a breakout season for Andrew Bynum. I hope that Jim Buss does not lead this franchise into utter destruction, and the Lamar Odom trade to the Mavs still doesn’t make any sense. It will be interesting to see if Dwight Howard will be playing in purple and gold, and at what price.

ZS: Looks like this will be a season of turmoil and a major test for Mike Brown.  I don’t think it could have been more difficult for him to start.  Without Lamar and with adding so many pieces and learning a new offense this could be a rough one for Laker Land but if they get it together by playoff time and stay healthy they may surprise people.

suns NBA Preview: Pacific Division
Team: Phoenix Suns
2010/11 Record: 40-42 – 10th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: Everything went downhill for the Suns last year. You even had Steve Nash putting ownership on blast via Twitter. This team is a ticking time bomb, and I just feel bad for Nash.

ZS: Still reeling from that horrible Shaq trade.  This team lost its sense of direction and then lost its budding superstar in Amare.  It is not going to be a fun few years for this team as it has begun its decline.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This team needs everything to be honest. Steve Nash is on the decline, and they need someone to pass the torch to. The Suns have gone in full rebuilding mode, but they have shown no signs of trying to dig themselves out of the rut that they are stuck in.

ZS: They may give some teams trouble when hot from the 3-point line but that is not going to get them 40 wins again.  Look to rebuild with some young players and establish some defensive ability to the team.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: Bottom fourth of the Western Conference. Yeah, it’s that bad.

ZS: At least they have warm weather most of the year, right?

tyreke evans kings NBA Preview: Pacific DivisionTeam: Sacramento Queens Kings
2010/11 Record: 24-58 – 14th in Western Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: They were rebuilding last year with their new young core.  They didn’t win many games but they look to be adding for the future.

AS: The Kings had a positive season with a great young core centered around Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins showed a lot of potential to be a great post player in this league, but he certainly has his fair share of character issues.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: An attitude fix for Cousins.  The kid is good but he needs to just shut up and play.  They have a good core in Evans, Cousins and now Hickson.  They need to decrease the amount of points they give up a game.  But in reality they just need to keep building that roster around the core 3.

AS: The Kings were rumored with AK47 through the free agency period, but nothing has happened yet. I think he would be a great addition to the young squad by bringing a veteran defensive presence. Like Zayd said, they need to build around the core they have.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: They might have a chance to compete for a playoff spot but they don’t have the roster to win.  While next season might be ok I do like this team’s prospects for the future.  They already aren’t the worst team in the Pacific in my opinion anymore either.

AS: I agree with Zayd, they’re not the worst team in the pacific anymore. They have a good young core that will be interesting to watch. I am interested to see how Jimmer fits in the mix, as he could be a very dangerous player for them knowing his shooting ability. This team has the potential to compete for a playoff spot, but I’m not sure they are over that hump and have the chemistry to do so.

NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

Posted by Zayd Sharif On December - 18 - 2011

Ladies and Gentlemen, the NBA is back! We’ll be previewing each and every team division by division, posting analysis on each division per day all the way up to Christmas Eve to get you ready for the NBA kickoff on Christmas Day. Here is a look at the Atlantic Division by Zayd Sharif and Avi Shah!

celtics 300x213 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

Pierce, Rondo, KG courtesy of NJ.com

Team: Boston Celtics
2010/11 Record: 56-26 – 3rd in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Celtics were the oldest team in the league and it showed. The Kendrick Perkins trade was a real back breaker, and still doesn’t make sense to this day. The 5 game loss to Miami in the second round had a rough sting, not that I’m complaining or anything…
ZS: Like Avi said, that Perkins trade made no sense to me other than to save money.  They weakened what they had down low and teams took advantage of it.  You could see those knees wearing down on a few players.  Rondo was outstanding but they need their defense to carry them and when they lost their anchor they lost their chance to win.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: This team needs to get younger. They need to build around Rondo, not ship him away if they plan on avoiding a decade of failure like they had in the 90s. KG and Ray Ray’s contracts up next summer, which will get them off the books big time in this new CBA. They picked up Chris Wilcox, but lost Jeff Green for the entire season after surgery. They also missed out on David West, a piece that would have really helped the Celtic, but were unable to sign him.

ZS: Youth, youth, youth.  This is a talented team but when teams are putting together these youthful squads its too much for them to handle.  Get another big man who can handle his defensive responsibilities individually.  And they just lost Green so that really hurts them with the whole youth thing.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: I actually like the Celtics (well not really like) to have a bounce back season for one last run. A shorter season could end up hurting this old team getting into game shape and building the necessary chemistry (see KG’s rant about putting tortillas in microwaves).

ZS: They will give it another shot, but I don’t see a title in their future without a real defensive big man.  Rondo will probably tear it up again but he isn’t enough because of how much he lacks offensively at times.  Home court in the first round, out in the second.

Nets D will 300x201 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

D-Will courtesy of myradionetwork.net

Team: New Jersey Nets
2010/11 Record: 24-58 – 12th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: Avery Johnson was left wondering what happened to his center Brook Lopez. I’m wondering the same thing. Only positive from last year was landing D-Will after his departure from Utah. They were also bought by the coolest owner in the league, Mikhail.
ZS: Landed a star in Deron Williams to pair up with Brook Lopez.  Only problem was Lopez didn’t show up.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: The Nets need to find someone to pair up with Derron Williams in order to keep him  Dwight Howard has expressed his interests to play in New Jersey, but it doesn’t seem like the Nets have been able to put together the right deal to reel him in. The Nets have to have a “Dwight or bust” attitude, or else D-Will will be packing his bags next summer.

ZS: Keep D-Wills is right but they need to get Lopez to play like a real big man who gets more than 6 RPG as your starting center. They don’t have much talent on that roster but have some money to spend if they can find good players who can score and play good defense.  Probably some ear plugs to make Avery’s voice bearable too.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: This is a big year for the Nets. New ownership wants to move the franchise to Brooklyn, but this season will determine if that will be a desirable location for stars. Unless the Nets are able to get Howard by the trade deadline, the outlook is not very pleasant. Even getting him by the deadline will be too late to make noise for this season.

ZS: Two good players is not enough to make the playoffs, even in the East.  Could be a team on the move to Brooklyn.  If they don’t do something productive D-Wills is going to speak up again and stir up some drama.

knicks 300x217 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

Melo and Amare, courtesy of gothamist.com

Team: New York Knicks
2010/11 Record: 42-40 – 6th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: Top three contracts: New York Knicks Salaries.  Need I say more?
AS: So after two years of roster sweeping, the Knicks ended up with Amare and Melo. I guess they were happy with that, minus that playoff exit in which the injury bug struck. It was a revival season in NYC, Madison Square Garden came back to life for the Knicks after a long time.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: The Knicks just keep rolling in those huge contracts.  Obviously they are trying to bring in the talent but they need to clear up some cap room.  Players will want to join forces with Amare and Melo to battle Miami but they won’t for minimum wage…if the Knicks can even afford to pay that much.  Oh and some defense…

AS: The team needs to find a way to build some chemistry and keep the ball moving amongst the superstars. The Knicks felt that they needed a big man and therefore went and got Tyson Chandler from Dallas. They unfortunately had to lose Billups to ammnesty in the process, but picked up Mike Bibby and Barron Davis to fill the void. Bibby and Davis are both old, and Davis has his back problems, but it may be enough to get the job done.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Well they added Tyson who makes them a very formidable team if Tyson provides the same tenacity he did in Dallas.  They could still use a better PG but this team is looking to keep improving and can really challenge Miami.

AS: Like Zayd said, Chandler makes this team a much better squad. Chandler is the ultimate clean up guy, and can be a real presence in the post with Amare. I think the Knicks have a roster that can compete with the Celtics for the 3 seed.

76ers 300x225 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

Jrue Holiday, courtesy of phillysportscentral.com

Team: Philadelphia 76ers
2010/11 Record: 41-41 – 7th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
AS: The Sixers had a very successful year under new head coach Doug Collins by making it to the playoffs. They unfortunately met Miami in the first round, but they showed a lot of potential. It is a young squad with Jrue Holiday and Jodie Meeks showing a lot of potential.
ZS: This is a team I like a lot.  Elton finally stayed healthy and made an impact their young player should promise and growth.  Problem is the East is extremely top heavy so making the playoffs was as far as they could go.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
AS: They need to gain some more experience and perhaps get another scorer. The possibility of shipping out Iguodala still exists, and they could get good value out of him.

ZS: They need a true super star.  Iguodala and Brand are both secondary guys, as good as they are.  Unless they can pull a big free agent or some sort of trade this team is going to be stuck in the middle for a while.

Outlook for 2011/12:
AS: I think the Sixers will have a similar season to last year and end up around the same spot in the East when it’s all said and done. I think Jrue Holiday could have a real break out season for the Sixers this year, he is a stud.

ZS: With a younger team you hope they progress from season to season but they really can’t expect to compete with Chicago, Miami and Boston.

Raptors 300x203 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

DeMar DeRozan courtesy of bleacherreport.com

Team: Toronto Raptors
2010/11 Record: 22-60 – 14th in Eastern Conference
2010/11 Review:
ZS: We all know LBJ dropped his former team on their face but the Cavs were better with him than the Raptors were with Bosh.  Then he left.  Then they became one of the worst teams in the NBA. The team is straight role players.

AS: I’m not sure why the Raptors hung on to Chris Bosh for as long as they did. They must have known there was no way he was coming back to Toronto, no matter how much he liked the city. It’s the team that matters. The Raptors pretty much became a JV team after he left. It’s teams like the Raptors that really make me wish the NBA would adapt the rule from the English Premiere League – if you suck, you’re out and we give new teams a chance. I’m sure some people from Seattle would be down for that.

Team Needs in 2011/12:
ZS: They are rebuilding and need to find a franchise player.  The team was slightly competitive with Bosh but never a real contender and is far from it now.  Find a player to build around.

AS: The two best players left on the Raptors are DeMar DeRozan and Andrea Bargnani. That pretty much tells you what they need. They are a young team that really needs a star to build around. It could be a long road for the Raptors.

Outlook for 2011/12:
ZS: Not good.  Bottom of the East again but hey maybe they can get another high draft pick.

AS: I think the 66-game schedule is a blessing. The Raptors just have to suck for 16 less games to get a high lottery pick. I mean sucking that bad must take some effort right?
